Off Duty - Law Enforcement Officers, "Moonlighting"

Rate of pay directly to LEO usually $35 - $50 dollars power hour or use of an apartment in trade of services.

 

At Hind's we have the utmost respect for Law Enforcement Officers (LEO's) .  We will also agree they are the BEST deterrent for crime in your business or neighborhood.  They are in their LEO uniform, armed, usually working still with their Law Enforcement powers to detain and arrest.  Many times they are also driving their off duty vehicle and at times they may use their red and blue lights to pull a suspicious people over and question them.  BY FAR, The BEST choice in a perfect world.  But in reality, we don't live there.  

 

If a Moonlighting LEO hits someone no matter who is a fault.  The LEO is covered by the LEO's agency.  If the LEO is at fault they sue everyone including the company the LEO is working for.  You the client.  Most likely the LEO's insurance would pay for the accident without the client needing to pay any legal fees.  Or just an hour or two to review.  Let's take situations a bit further.  Let’s say a LEO at minimum is in a verbal altercation with a tenant.  This tenant decides to sue for harassment.  Usually people sue the LEO, the Department and the City or County.   In this case, they sue the LEO and the client (you).  Being off duty the LEO must hire his/her own attorney and you start paying yours.  Why?  LEOs "ARE NOT REQUIRED TO CARRY LIABILITY INSURANCE" when working security.   What if your LEO was involved in a altercation?  Tazer incident?  Shooting?  Fatality?  Right or wrong legal fees could cripple or bankrupt your company.  If you are a sole proprietor you could loose all your assets.

 

Licensed Security Guard Companies

Billing Rate $14-$25 per hour.  Rate of pay Company pays Security Guard $7.25 - $11.  Ask Companies what they pay.

 

Indiana Law requires Security providers to maintain at least $100,000 in liability insurance.  This is better protection than uninsured LEOs but attorneys often will go after the client as well.  So business's need well trained security personnel to know how to manage situations and reduce the chance of liable error being made.

 

Paul Blart gave everyone a look inside working security.  We are all people.  The problem is all the good security officers leave after they are offered a better paying job.  On average when you contract with a security contractors they start with a younger unemployed individual with little to no criminal record.  Just starting there is sometimes very difficult.  This individual is at least responsible enough to show up on time and is being trained on the job usually paired with a more experienced individual.   Depending on what services you need, this may suffice.  The problems with these big national companies is turnover.  A Securitas manager was quoted saying we are just putting bodies in suits and sending them out.  Read your local paper.  How often you see security companies trying to hire people is a direct reflection on how well they pay their staff.  If you are continually training people you never will have a security guard working at a proficient level.  Many times a security guard job is selected because the individual is burned out on working fast food.  Ask yourself, is this the type of person I want securing my business?
